on exhibit in the Marjorie Barrick Museum at UNLV
State of Change
Photography by Gary A. Reese
on exhibit in the Marjorie Barrick Museum at UNLV.
Now through October 29, 2009
Closing Reception on October 23 from 5 to 7PM.
Many new residents to Nevada have a difficult time recognizing the relevance of Nevada history. Without a sense of the past, they are less apt to appreciate the contributions of previous citizens. Connecting with their past helps people make the transition to becoming a "Nevadan." Through re-photographic montages using Timothy O'Sullivan's 1867-71 expedition imagery, Reese aids this transition by visually revealing cultural and environmental changes in Nevada over the last one hundred and forty years.
Concurrently, Reese seeks out modern and often lesser known scenes which reveal Nevada's natural and cultural heritage. His photographic search continuing the long tradition of photographically interpretating Nevada in a blended narrative and documentary style, reminiscent of O'Sullivan, Arthur Rothstein, and Peter Goin.
Weekdays, 8AM to 4:45PM
Saturdays, 10AM to 2PM

What began as a handcrafted "message in a bottle" is now a burgeoning global on-line and off-line community that represents an astonishing cross-section of characters and cultures. It started with 1,000 blank books, released into the world in the Summer of 2000 by San Francisco artist Someguy. Shot on all the continents the journals themselves have traveled, this film reveals the beauty and power of the filled pages, interwoven with delicate portraits of people whose lives they touched.
Screening will be followed by a question and answer session and refreshments.
Free and open to the public. For more information, please call 507-3964.
